What’s happening in the classroom

We are working on many new objectives this month.  It is hard to believe that we have already been in school for 100 days!  We will celebrate with a 100th day activities during math!
In Math the students are continuing to use their addition and subtraction skills!   We are also looking forward to beginning our geometry unit.  Multiplication is coming!  Keep working on addition and subtraction facts as well as repeated addition.  This will make the transition to multiplication a breeze!
We are working hard in reading on our fluency and comprehension.  Please encourage your child to read as much as possible independently and aloud to you.  Ask your child questions about what they are reading to improve their understanding of what they have read.  Our goal is to be reading chapter books by the end of second grade.
We are moving and shaking in science and social studies as well!  In science, we will continue our studies of the solar system.  In social studies, we are completing our study of government and will be moving on toward Economics at the end of the month!
In writing we are working on our creative writing pieces and discovering that writing is a wonderful way to express ourselves!  We are also working hard on our neat handwriting so that we will be able to start cursive soon!  The 2nd graders are doing a GREAT job!

Valentines Party

We will celebrate Valentine’s Day on Tuesday, February 14th.  We are going to have an ice cream social!  We will build ice cream sundaes and exchange valentines.  We will be decorating our very own Valentine Mailboxes to collect our valentines.  Please send in a empty Kleenex box with your child no later than February 6th.  We will provide all materials needed to create our mailboxes.  If your child would like to pass out valentines please be sure they bring one for everyone.  There is a class list as well as sundae donations, attached to the back of this letter.  You are always more than welcome to join us!  We will begin our festivities around 2pm!

Kalamazoo Wings Field Trip
On Wednesday, March 7th Oakland Academy will head to Wings Stadium to cheer on the Kalamazoo Wings and celebrate March Is Reading Month.

The presale ticket cost is $3 per person.  (This field trip is cash only).  Anyone wishing to meet our group at the game will have to pay full price ($12-14).  Money and chaperone form is due no later than Wednesday, February 1st.  This will provide us enough notice to provide Wings front office an accurate count for group seats.  Sorry but after this date we will no longer be able to accept additional chaperones.

Students and chaperones are responsible to bring a bag lunch to eat during the game.  Doors open at 9 a.m. and face off is at 10:30 a.m.  We need to leave Oakland Academy by 9:15a.m. so we can participate in some of the pre-game festivities.  We will return to school at the completion of the game.  Please see Mrs. Resman with any questions regarding this event.

Have a lovely February!

Mrs. Resman & Ms. Eavenson

PTO NEWS!!!

Check out our pictures!
Dear Parents,

We want to inform you of the progress our students made during the 2010-2011 school year.  We constantly review each student's learning progress to be certain that we are "on track."  One way we do this is by employing a widely used and nationally validated achievement test.  This test is administered throughout the United States to hundreds of thousands of children annually, both at the beginning, and again at the end of the school year.

Our students have completed the spring test and we can now judge the results of our students' and out teachers' efforts this school year.

Our charts demonstrate the results in greater detail.

We welcome others to join us for the 2011 - 2012 school year!
